Upcoming Webinar: Creating a Safe and Inclusive Built Environment for People with Disabilities in Tribal Communities
Wednesday, December 9, 2020
2:00p.m.-3:00p.m. EST
Join us for our webinar titled Creating a Safe and Inclusive Built Environment for People with Disabilities in Tribal Communities. The webinar, which will feature our partners from the disability inclusion movement and the tribal planning and design professions, will include the presentation of a new America Walks report and recommendations for improving inclusivity and accessibility in Indian Country. There will also be an announcement of a mini-grant funding opportunity for communities and groups interested in advancing best practices in this field.
New Publication: Identification of Effective Programs to Improve Access to and Use of Trails among Youth from Under-Resourced Communities: A Review
The primary aim of this review paper was to identify programs and policies that effectively promote and increase the use of trails among youth, especially those from under-resourced neighborhoods or communities. Three additional goals of the review included identifying (1) correlates of physical activity/trail use and features of transportation systems or built environment and land use destinations that may inform and support the planning and implementation of programs to promote trail use among youth, (2) benefits associated with trail use, and (3) barriers to trail use.
Importantly, no studies were located that evaluated programs designed to promote and increase trail use among youth. Thus, this new research publication vividly highlights the lack of scientific evidence that addresses the underrepresentation of trail use by youth from under-resourced communities. If you have additional questions, contact David Brown at drb8@cdc.gov.

Walking as a Practice: What Does It Mean to You?
There are many reasons to walk that are not related to transportation. The practice of walking can impact our health, spirituality, and culture.
In this webinar, we will expand on how walking is ingrained in our being (whether on foot or on wheels), focus on examples of walking as a practice, and discuss how walking can break down barriers in our communities. This webinar is intended for those just starting out on the walking path as well as those interested in learning more about the topic.

New Resource: State-Level Physical Activity Planning in the United States: A NEW Report from the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance
This NEW report from the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance (NPAPA) reviews the availability of, and content within, state-level physical activity plans in use across the United States.
An overarching priority of the National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP) is to "support development and implementation of comprehensive physical activity strategic plans at the state, regional, and community levels." Using the evidence-informed NPAP as a blueprint, states are called to develop stand-alone state-specific physical activity plans that includes context-specific strategies and tactics for all sectors to take a role in physical activity promotion.
This new report analyzes the number of states with public health plans that include physical activity and the extent to which those plans align with the NPAP priorities and the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans for the first time.

Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) Releases 2019 USVI KIDS COUNT Data Book
Key KIDS COUNT Data Book 2019 Highlights (from the most recent data available)
-
Child Population - The child population in the Virgin Islands has diminished significantly since the year 2000, decreasing by more than 14,500 children (or 42%). In 2015, children represented 20% of the total population.
-
Child Poverty - In 2015, the child poverty rate in the Virgin Islands decreased to 30%, matching the lowest reported poverty rate for children recorded since 2010. By comparison, in the United States, 21% of all children live in families with incomes below the federal poverty threshold, ranging from 11% in New Hampshire to 32% in Mississippi (source: National Center for Children in Poverty).
-
School Readiness - Consistent with the last decade of reported results, there remains a significant number of Virgin Islands children entering public kindergarten lacking age-expected cognition skills (31% in 2018, 31% in 2016, 35% in 2015) and language skills (48% in 2018, 44% in 2016, 50% in 2015).
-
Health Insurance - In 2015, 18.9% of all Virgin Islands children and youth, ages birth through 19 (4,022 children) lacked health insurance. Although this rate is less than previous years (26% in 2015, 27% in 2013), it still remains higher than in any state, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.
-
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Depression - The data from the Community Needs Assessment suggest high levels of risk for PTSD and depression in the school-age population surveyed throughout the Territory (source: Community Needs Assessment: Understanding the Needs of Vulnerable Children and Families in the U.S. Virgin Islands Post Hurricanes Irma and Maria, 2019, p. 85).
This release of USVI KIDS COUNT 2019 marks the two-year anniversary of the Territory’s devastation from Hurricanes Irma and Maria - two category 5 hurricanes. In September 2018, CFVI provided a one-year update letter to our community which expressed gratitude for the efforts that had shown us the very best of humanity: family, friends, neighbors and even strangers coming together in remarkable ways. And we promised to continue the work of rebuilding a stronger, more resilient USVI for all our people.
“These pressing challenges call for smart policies, innovative solutions, and focused attention on our priorities. The more we support all Virgin Islands children to grow up healthy, hopeful, and contributing to the community, the brighter our future looks,” said Baecher-Brown.
